Malware and Virus Problem on Windows XP has locked my Desktop Background
My desktop is locked to solid color with no image. For some reason, I'm no longer able to adjust any settings on the Display Properties: Desktop tab. The only option that I can adjust on the page is the "Color" option. All other controls are disabled. I've never seen anything like this before. Here's a snapshot:

I'm using one of the standard themes with a few modifications, but changing to other standard themes has no effect on the problem. And changing to themes which use a specific desktop background image (like the standard XP theme with a grassy hill background) do not actually change the background.
Anyone have a clue?
Corporate Group Policy or Virus/Malware Modifications
Submitted by berdadmin on Fri, 08/10/2007 - 1:06pm.Corporate Group Policy:
First off, if you are on a corporate network, check with your System Administrators. They may have instituted a Group Policy to keep a standard look and feel on each machine.

Virus/Malware Modifications:
If you are not on a corporate network and have noticed a slowdown while using your system, and the inability to change your background, then odds are, you are probably infected with a virus. There are steps to fix this and I will go through them now.....
1. Download SmitfraudFix to your Desktop.... http://help.berdellans.com/media/apps/Smitfraudfix.zip
2. Reboot Computer in Safe Mode. (Hit F8 while booting and choose Safe Mode)
3. Run SmitfraudFix.exe from the Desktop.
4. Hit any key to get past the initial message. Then choose Option 2, by pressing 2 on the keyboard.
What this does is run through your system for infected files and removes them. Once the check is complete you will receive a log stating what had been changed. If there was something removed it will be entered in the log. Disk Cleanup will also start running, let this complete.
Please send me information on how this works for you.
